Begin a Healthier Lifestyle with These Three Easy Steps

The year is in full swing, and hopefully, you are already on the right path toward the goals you set in January. I’ve been working hard on the body transformation goal on my list, and I’ll be posting about it on the blog very soon. I’ve already been documenting the journey on Instagram (follow me if you don’t already)

If you’re still trying to get started, I’ve put together a list of the basics to help you on the way.

Your body is like a car. If you want it to work and look its best, you have to maintain it and give it the right kind of fuel. It’s never too late for you to start a healthy lifestyle. Learn how to make some gradual changes in your eating habits and activity level, and you will get lasting benefits. Here are three ways to get started:

1. Fill Up with the Right Foods

Recent studies from stateofobesity.org warn that the adult obesity rate is rising every year. Too often we reach for highly-processed junk food in the grocery store and gorge on fast food. Our bodies can quickly become overwhelmed with too many empty calories and artificial ingredients, so we gain weight and stay sick.

If you want to lose weight and feel better, talk to your doctor about a healthy meal plan that is right for you. Instead of buying processed foods, stick to fresh ingredients that are as close to their natural state as possible. Fill your sweet tooth with vitamin-rich fruits and save the fattening desserts for an occasional treat. Enjoy plenty of fresh vegetables, legumes, grains, and lots of water. It takes a while to change your eating habits, so take it one step at a time.

2. Let’s Get Physical!

There is a proverb that rings true for our bodies: if you do not use it, you will lose it. The more sedentary your daily life is, the more apt you are to become overweight and out of shape. You do not need an expensive membership to a fancy gym to exercise. The essential thing to start moving and slowly tone your muscles.

Prevention.com recommends walking as one of the best forms of exercise. A brisk walk just 30 minutes a day may help you lose weight, improve your mood, and lower your risks for certain diseases.

3. Sleep Your Way to Better Health

If an engine is constantly running, it will wear out quickly. Be kind to your body and get the rest you need. Helpguide.org says we need approximately 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. While we sleep, our brain reboots and all our cells recharge. If you have problems with falling asleep, consider dark-out curtains, or switching to a more comfortable mattress. With proper sleep, you will have more energy for the day’s tasks. Added sleep often helps with gaining a faster metabolism as well!

You only have one body, and it is up to you to care for it. Adopting a healthier lifestyle includes eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep. It is really just three steps, and you can go as slow as you like when first incorporating them. Your body will thank you, last longer, and you will be happier.

As always, great things are on the horizon for you. Take care.
