Why the New Year Matters

I know what some of you are thinking. January 1st is just another day. Sure you might get out of going to work (if you’re lucky enough) but at the end of the day, It’s not like some magic is going to wash over the world and make everything new. It’s not like you’re any different than the day before, and as such, those resolutions you made may be as temporary as the paper they’re written on. You’ll probably still go to work like any other day on the 2nd, the holiday season will basically be over, and life will go on as it has.

This is true, but let me spit some pseudoscience at you. I call it pseudoscience because I haven’t done any research on this (maybe for another blog)  and it’s an observation that I’m about to state as fact.

The human psyche thrives off of cycles. It depends on them.  Our very lives are driven by the cycle of night and day. Even life and death can be described as a cycle that affects us all.

There is a literal renewal that happens at the start of a new cycle, and it is a little something like magic. Think about when you clock-out and end your work cycle. Don’t you feel different? More relaxed? Freer? Nothing has really changed about the world since the time you clocked in. But something has changed inside of you.

Think about when you sleep. After a good night’s sleep, your body is literally recharged and rejuvenated. You might wake up and that headache from last night is just a memory. There’s no real magic there, just science. There’s something significant in it.

Yes, our lives can be seen as one continuous journey through time, but breaking these moments into cycles has helped us to organize and put things in perspective for centuries. In this season we plant, in the other, we harvest. In this season we splurge, in the other we ration, etc.

So the new year is significant in that it provides us with a vital starting and ending point to a pre-set cycle. Without these sometimes arbitrary starts and ends to cycles, many times we won’t stop to see what’s really going on around us, and in ourselves.

Most people just keep chugging along on their continuous life-timeline until something stops them in their tracks. For some people, that “something” could be an illness, a loss of a job or loved one, a divorce. It’s not until it’s “too late” that they slow down and analyze where they’re going and where they’ve been.

So this is why I think the new year matters. It provides that end and start of a new cycle and provides a framework for analysis. How do you feel about the cycle that has passed? What would you like to manifest in the cycle to come?

I take the new year cycle change way too seriously, but I think it helps me. I’m always running self-analysis, but just in case I ever get off track or so far gone that I’ve stopped really paying attention to me, this time of year makes me stop, take a few moments, and really think about what I want, and what I want to focus on in the cycle to come.

So try not to be too cynical or sarcastic about the new year or making New Year’s Resolutions. Use it as a checkpoint to check in with yourself, with your loved ones, and see just how you want to steer your life down this time continuum in the cycle to come.

In the spirit of celebrating and using the New Year, I’ve written a short book, Realize Your Resolutions, that focuses on setting specific goals and making a plan that will help you stay on track and maintain your focus throughout the year.

Realize your Resolutions

I think most people are sarcastic about New Year’s Resolutions because they and everyone around them have failed at them in the past. We all have. But what if you flip that. What if you use strategy to point yourself in a direction on day 1, and you see yourself at your intended destination at the end of the year? Wouldn’t that be a powerful process? Wouldn’t you look forward to what you can speak into existence at the start of the next year? I do, and I want to share that feeling with you.

So the book is on Amazon, and as a gift, the Kindle Ebook format will be available for free from Friday Until Sunday (dec. 29th -31st), so grab your copy, read it, and if anything in there makes sense for your life, put it into practice and see how you can use the new year cycle as a lightning rod for success in the year to come.

Thank you so much for reading!

Great things are on the horizon for you. Take care.
